Thomas Cowger and Mitch Caver reveal the impact of the life and achievements of one of the most important First American leaders of the eighteenth century. Thomas W. Cowger, Ph.D., is a professor of history at East Central Uni-versity in Ada, Oklahoma, and has held the Chickasaw Na-tion Endowed Chair in Native American Studies since 2004. He also serves as director of the Native American Studies program there. He is author of The National Congress of Ameri-can Indians: The Founding Years and co-author of Lyndon Johnson Remembered: An Intimate Portrait of a Presidency. Cowger has also published several articles in ac-ademic journals. He earned his doctorate in history at Purdue University in Indiana in 1994. Mitch Caver's passion for Chickasaw history has led to a steadfast friendship with the Chickasaw Nation. Many of the most important recent discoveries concerning Chickasaw historical research are attributable to his efforts and his detailed knowledge of the land near the heart of the Chickasaw Homeland, especially near his hometown of Baldwyn, Mississippi. In 2015 he was honored with the Friend of the Chickasaw Award by Chickasaw Na-tion Governor Bill Anoatubby, who also had conferred upon him an honorary citizenship in the Nation in 2014.
