Virginia Woolf's second novel, Night and Day is a love story and comedy of manners in the best tradition of Jane Austen about the conflicts faced by two couples when trying to formalize their relationship. However, the plot also questions that literary heritage in the light of modern sensibility. The result is a novel that is both classic and renewing, in which the clash between society's expectations and personal desires is pointed out, and themes such as women's suffrage, the transience of experience and the possibility of achieving egalitarian relationships are explored.

Virginia Woolf was born in London on January 25, 1882, and died on March 28, 1941, after drowning in the River Ouse. Following the death of her father, the renowned man of letters Sir Leslie Stephen, Virginia and her sister Vanessa left the elegant district of Kensington and moved to bohemian Bloomsbury, which gave its name to the brilliant literary circle that formed around the Stephen sisters. Its members included, among others, T. S. Eliot, Bertrand Russell, Vita Sackville-West, and the writer Leonard Woolf, whom Virginia married and with whom she ran the prestigious Hogarth Press. From her earliest works, Virginia Woolf made clear her intention to take the novel beyond mere storytelling. In Mrs Dalloway (1925) and To the Lighthouse (1927), two of the greatest novels in history according to readers of The Guardian, she conveyed her characters’ inner feelings through distinctive techniques, achieving powerful psychological effects through images, metaphors, and symbols. Her technique reached maturity with Orlando (1928) and The Waves (1931), securing her an undisputed place among the greatest writers in world literature. Woolf also wrote such celebrated essays as A Room of One’s Own (1929), which continues to inspire new generations of women today; works of literary criticism such as those collected in The Common Reader (1925, 1932) and Genius and Ink (2021); and Flush (1933), a biography of the dog belonging to the English poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
