San Francisco, July 1899: The young magician Harry Houdini is on tour in California with his charming wife Bess. The public is fascinated by his new escape number where he breaks free from tens of handcuffs and chains in record time.
After one of his shows, Houdini is invited to the home of a rich silk dealer in Chinatown named Ong Lin Foon. Ong, who has little trust in the police, asks Houdini to find his niece who was kidnapped upon her arrival in San Francisco. Ong fears that she has been forced to work in one of the numerous brothels of Chinatown. Encouraged by Bess who is revolted by the fate of these women, Houdini accepts to investigate the girl's disappearance. What Bess doesn't know is that the magician will also undertake a parallel secret mission for the US government.
Between the Chinese mafia, corruption and magic tricks, Metamorphosis offers a fascinating portrait of a time and a city in full economic expansion through the unique vision of the intrepid Houdini.
