Márton Nemes: Metropolitan Baroque

Hungarian artist Márton Nemes (born 1986, lives in New York and Budapest) creates spaces for bodily perception at the intersection of abstract painting and sculpture, digital culture, techno, and urbanity. In his radical installations of powder-coated steel with embedded speakers and an LED screen, visitors encounter light and sound elements that expand into a pulsating environment. Nemes's immersive, multisensory spaces reflect the rapid acceleration, fragmentation, and technology's superimposition of our present, while simultaneously allowing for the experience of self-determined fluidity and contemplation. This volume documents Nemes's comprehensive exhibition Metropolitan Baroque at the Museum gegenstandsfreier Kunst (Museum of Non-Objective Art) featuring works from 2019 to 2025.

Má rton Nemes (born 1986, Budapest) is a contemporary Hungarian artist known for vibrant, multimedia works that combine painting, installation, and sound. His practice explores perception and digital culture through bold colors and immersive environments. He has exhibited internationally and is part of a new generation of abstract artists. Wilko Austermann (born 1990, Steinheim) studied art history in Dü sseldorf and Rome. Since 2016, he has worked as an independent art mediator for institutions including Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden and Kunstpalast. He has curated art projects since 2014, focusing on contemporary themes and suitable exhibition contexts. Since 2017, he has organized exhibitions in Mö nchengladbach and Krefeld, with a particular research interest in the influence of digitalization on art. Hanna Claris is a Hungarian-British art historian and writer based in Budapest. Her experience spans nonprofit galleries, art-and-technology startups, and private collection management, leading to her current role as assistant to Hungarian artist Má rton Nemes. She has been closely involved in his studio and communication management, including his representation of Hungary at the 60th Venice Biennale.
