The plot of the play originally arose in the novel of the Italian Renaissance, and Shakespeare recognized it in the treatment of the English poet Arthur Brooke in the poem "Romeus and Juliet" (1562). The action of the play spans five days and takes place at the beginning of the 14th century in the city of Verona.
