Author did not want to write exclusively about his experience in the war, even though he drew on his time in the army for several chapters. Instead, he wanted to underscore the importance of common Confederate soldiers within Lost Cause memory.The Lost Cause of the Confederacy is an ideological assertion made by many Confederate veterans which claimed that the cause of the Confederate States during the American Civil War was just, heroic, and not centered on slavery.

Carlton McCarthy (1847-1936) was the mayor of Richmond (Virginia, United States) from 1904 to 1908. Prior to this, he served as a soldier in the Confederate Army.He wrote a book about his four years of Civil War experience called Detailed Minutiae of Soldier Life in the Army of Northern Virginia 1861-1865.
