You pulled up the carpet and there it was: real wood, buried for decades, scuffed and stained and beautiful. Now one contractor says it's finished and another says it can be saved, and the quote to redo it is big enough to make you wonder whether you could do it yourself. You can, more often than you think, once you know how to judge the floor instead of guessing at it. Refinish Hardwood Floors Yourself is a calm, honest, start-to-finish guide to deciding whether an old wood floor is worth keeping and then bringing it back, written for someone who has never run a floor sander and is afraid of ruining something irreplaceable. This is not a glossy remodeling fantasy or a professional trade manual. It starts with the question you actually have, can this floor be saved and should I be the one to do it, and only then walks through both the easy path and the full one, the specific damage in front of you, and the floors you should hand to a pro instead. Inside, you'll learn: How to tell solid wood from engineered and laminate, and measure whether there's enough wood left to refinish at all Why two flooring companies can honestly give you opposite answers, and how to decide for yourself When a quick screen-and-recoat is all a tired floor needs, and when only a full sand will do How to rent and run a floor sander through the right grit sequence without carving a permanent gouge How to repair scratches, gouges, dents, and burn marks of different depths What to do about black pet stains and water stains that won't just sand out How to handle gaps, cupping, squeaks, and loose or missing boards How to choose between oil, water-based, and penetrating finishes and the right sheen, then apply it cleanly The clear signs, thin wood, lead or asbestos, moisture, structural trouble, that mean you should stop and call a professional Measure first, decide second, and start with Chapter 1. By the end, the floor under the carpet won't be a gamble. It'll be a project you know how to finish.
