The number 10 of Pelé, Maradona, or Messi; the 7 of Cristiano Ronaldo or Álex Aguinaga; the 14 of Johan Cruyff... The heroes of the pitch carry numbers on their backs. Juan Villoro revisits these figures of mythical stature. When the tribe's representatives step onto the field, "what is at stake is no longer just a sport. Juan Villoro es novelista, cuentista, dramaturgo, ensayista, autor de libros para niños, cronista y articulista en varias publicaciones alrededor del mundo. Dirigió durante tres años el suplemento cultural del diario La Jornada. Ha sido profesor en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, en la Universidad Pompeu Fabra de Barcelona, en Yale y en Princeton. Entre sus libros se encuentran La noche navegable, Albercas, La casa pierde (Premio Xavier Villaurrutia 1999), Efectos personales (Premio Mazatlán 2000), El testigo (Premio Herralde 2004), Dios es redondo (Premio Manuel Vázquez Montalbán 2006), Safari accidental, El libro salvaje, Arrecife, Ida y vuelta, en coautoría con Martín Caparrós y Espejo retrovisor, antología con lo mejor de sus treinta años como escritor. En 2012 recibió en Chile el Premio Iberoamericano José Donoso por el conjunto de su obra y en 2014 fue nombrado en México miembro de El Colegio Nacional. Juan Villoro is a novelist, short story writer, playwright, essayist, children's book author, chronicler, and columnist in various publications around the world. He directed the cultural supplement of the newspaper La Jornada for three years. He has taught at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Yale, and Princeton. Among his books are La noche navegable, Albercas, La casa pierde (Xavier Villaurrutia Prize 1999), Efectos personales (Mazatlán Prize 2000), El testigo (Herralde Prize 2004), Dios es redondo (Manuel Vázquez Montalbán Prize 2006), Safari accidental, El libro salvaje, Arrecife, Ida y vuelta, co-authored with Martín Caparrós, and Espejo retrovisor, an anthology featuring the best of his thirty years as a writer. In 2012 he received the José Donoso Ibero-American Prize in Chile for his body of work, and in 2014 he was named in Mexico as a member of El Colegio Nacional.
