Lev Tolstoy was a Russian author and one of the most important novelists of all time. He is especially known for his two longest works, War and Peace and Anna Karenina, which are unanimously considered masterpieces. The son of a nobleman and a princess, Tolstoy was orphaned at a young age and went to live with aunts, who entrusted his education to private tutors. In his adolescence and youth, Tolstoy gave himself over to the debauchery of St. Petersburg, where he drank relentlessly, played cards, and frequented the company of women. However, after finishing university, he returned to the countryside and there, seeing the extremely harsh living conditions of the peasants, decided to change his life and joined the army. Happily married and now retired to the countryside, Tolstoy wrote his two greatest works. In both, the family plays a special role. In fact, the famous opening of Anna Karenina is particularly memorable: "All happy families are alike, but every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way."
