Maryse Condé nació en Pointe-à-Pitre, comuna francesa del archipiélago antillano de Guadalupe, en 1937. Fue la menor de una familia de ocho hermanos. Cuando tenía dieciséis años, se marchó a París para estudiar en el liceo Fénelon, y después en la Sorbona. Allí conocería a Mamadou Condé, un actor guineano con el que contrajo matrimonio en 1959 y del que se divorciaría veintidós años después para casarse con Richard Philcox, el traductor al inglés de la mayor parte de su obra. Tras terminar sus estudios, trabajó como profesora de Francés en Guinea, Ghana y Senegal, hasta que en 1970 volvió a Francia. Cinco años después se doctoró en Literatura Comparada; su tesis versaba sobre los estereotipos negativos de la población negra que aparecían en la literatura caribeña. En 1976 publicó su primera novela, Hérémakhonon, que marcaría el inicio de una prolífica carrera literaria centrada en los temas de la cultura, la raza y el género, así como en la búsqueda de la identidad. En 1987 recibió su primer galardón literario, el Grand Prix Littéraire de la Femme, por su segunda novela: Yo, Tituba, la bruja negra de Salem (1986; Impedimenta, 2022). Entre sus obras también destacan la serie Segu (1985), La Migration des coeurs (1995, una reescritura antillana de Cumbres borrascosas, de Emily Brontë), La Deseada (1997; Impedimenta, 2021), Corazón que ríe, corazón que llora (1999; Impedimenta, 2019), Historia de la mujer caníbal (2003; Impedimenta, 2024), La vida sin maquillaje (2012; Impedimenta, 2020) y El Evangelio del Nuevo Mundo (2022; Impedimenta, 2023), su última novela publicada en francés. En 1985 Condé recibió una beca Fulbright para dar clase en Estados Unidos, y trabajó en universidades de la talla de Berkeley, Harvard y, más prolongadamente, Columbia, donde presidió el Centro de Estudios Franceses y Francófonos, hasta que en 2004 se retiró como profesora emérita de Francés. También ha participado en la creación del Premio de las Américas Insulares y Guyana, que reconoce anualmente el mejor libro del panorama caribeño, y fue la primera presidenta del Comité para la Memoria de la Esclavitud en Francia. Ante la anulación del Premio Nobel de 2018, la Nueva Academia le otorgó a Maryse Condé el Premio Nobel Alternativo de Literatura por retratar en su obra 'los estragos del colonialismo y el caos poscolonial con un lenguaje preciso y, al mismo tiempo, devastador'. En 2021, recibió el Prix Mondial Cino del Duca por su labor humanista en la cultura. Falleció en abril 2024 en la pequeña ciudad de Gordes.
