Perineal Trauma at Childbirth

This book details the prevention and management of perineal trauma during childbirth, which affects millions of women worldwide every year. A repair for such trauma is one of the commonest procedures undertaken in medicine, but this procedure is not without a number of issues. It is an area of clinical practice that falls between two subspecialties (maternal medicine and urogynecology), is assessed and repaired by two independent professions (obstetricians and midwives), and its complications are managed by a large multidisciplinary team. The book is also written and edited with all of these medical professions in mind.Perineal Trauma at Childbirth provides high-level evidence demonstrating that proper assessment and repair of perineal trauma can significantly improve outcomes for women, while reviewing the considerable benefits of trauma prevention to long-term outcomes, particularly for higher grades of perineal trauma. Khaled Ismail is a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Birmingham, UK.The underlying theme of his research work is improving pregnancy related maternal and fetal outcomes both at the short and longer term. Effect of maternal nutrition and vitamin supplementation on the fetal Epigenome Professor Ismail has won several prestigious awards including the University College London Dean's award for teaching and the Stoke and North Staffordshire Citizens of the year Innovation in Medical Technology and Development award.Professor Ismail is the Chair of the European Perineal Trauma PEERS group.
