Modes of Presentation analyses a collection of problems, known as 'Frege's puzzle', resulting from how thinkers and speakers have a limited perspective on reference in thought and language. Heck argues that these puzzles have much to teach us both about the foundations of cognition and the nature of linguistic communication.
Richard Kimberly Heck is Professor of Philosophy and Professor of Linguistics at Brown University. They received a BPhil from Oxford in 1987 and their PhD from MIT in 1991. Heck is perhaps best known for their work on Gottlob Frege's philosophy of logic and mathematics, having written two books on that topic: Frege's Theorem and Reading Frege's Grundgesetze (both OUP). Heck has also worked extensively on philosophy of language, philosophy of logic, philosophy of mathematics, and philosophy of mind. Most recently, they have been working on a range of issues concerning gender and sexuality.
