2At 2:40 in the morning, an eighty-seven-year-old woman with dementia stands in her doorway and says nine numbers. Mara Quinn writes them on the back of her hand. She has known those numbers since she was seven years old. They are nine digits in pencil, in the margin of a recipe page she has carried in her wallet through nine moves and five counties, and they came out of the black notebook the old woman keeps under her arm a cookbook with recipes in one hand and thirty years of figures in the margins. The cardamom cake page is missing. The family whose name is on the plaque in the lobby is the family Mara's mother worked for, for eleven months, in 2003. Mara has never told anyone what she saw from the third stair of a kitchen when she was six. Nobody believed her then. Nobody has believed her since. She files a single form, and inside a week a lawyer in a fifteen-year-old coat is waiting in the parking lot at five in the morning to tell her, kindly, that the numbers mean nothing. Somebody has been keeping this quiet for twenty-two years. Mara Quinn is very good at being invisible. She is about to stop.
