Arun K. Chattopadhyay is a Principal Scientist of ICI Canada, Inc. and has been actively involved in the field of surface and colloid science for the past 15 years. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Chemistry, University of Miami, Florida, and as an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biology, University of Quebec a Trois Rivieres, Quebec, Canada. He has published over 50 technical papers and holds 18 patents. Dr. Chattopadhyay received the Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry from the University of Kalyani, India, and was associated with the Laboratoire d'Electrochimie, University of Paris VI, and Department of Chemical Physics, Centre d'Etudes Nucleaires de Saclay, France, as a Research Associate. K. L. Mittal is actively teaching and consulting worldwide in the areas of adhesion and surface cleaning. Previously, he was associated with IBM Corporation (1972- 1993). Dr. Mittal has initiated, organized, and chaired a number of international symposia and he was recognized for his contributions by the worldwide adhesion community by organizing the 1st International Congress on Adhesion Science and Technology in 1995, in his honor. Dr. Mittal is the editor or coeditor of over 50 published books, including Polyimides, Particles on Surfaces and the Handbook of Adhesive Technology (all titles, Marcel Dekker, Inc .). He is a founding editor of the Journal of Adhesion Science and Technology and the recipient of many awards and honors, and is listed in several biographical reference books, such as Who's Wh o. He received the Ph.D. degree (1970) in colloid chemistry from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.
Surfactant fundamentals: branched versus linear hydrocarbon chains in surfactants; ellipsometric evidence of anomalous refractive indices; is contact angle hysteresis due to a film present behind a drop? STM molecular imaging of disordered molecular wires; studies of morphology and phase behaviour of monolayers; thermodynamics of adsorption of a cationic surfactant at solid-water interfaces. Micelles and microemulsions: pressure-jump studies on micellar relaxation time and its effect on various technological processes; micellar catalyzed reactions in mixed solvent systems; silica gels from microemulsions; the state of water and surfactant in surfactant-based lyotropic liquid crystals; polymerization of menthyl methacrylate and styrene in ternary emulsions and microemulsions. Polymer-surfactant interactions: polymer-surfactant interactions: effect of ionic strength, polymer charge and binding density on surfactant/polymer aggregates; polymer-surfactant complexation in dilute aqueous solutions. Adsorption of surfactants: adsorption on high and low molecular weight natural surfactants at the crude oil-water interface and their influence on y-pH and y-time behaviour; studies on asphaltenes and related petroleum fractions at interface; influence of surfactants on the adhesion of clay particles to metal surfaces; guidelines for the formulation, composition, and stirring to attained desired emulsion properties (type, droplet, size, viscosity, and stability); double emulsions stabilized by macromelecular surfactants. Biological applications of surfactants: interactions between the dispersed globules of W/O/W emulsions in the presence of proteins and saccharides; the design and evaluation of a novel submicron amphotericin B emulsion in systemic murine cryptococcosis; plant protein purification using cloud point extraction (CPE). Environmental aspects: environmental risk assessment of ethoxylated nonionic surfactants; toxic spill remediation of chlorinated hydrocarbons via microemulsion formation.
