Si cada novela pudiera representar un mundo, esta nueva novela de Alejandro Guillermo Roemmers representa, y de manera muy efectiva, dos. El último violín construido por el célebre lutier Antonio Stradivari es el protagonista y, al mismo tiempo, es el común denominador de las dos tramas, que terminan por formar un texto único: una novela policial cercana a la serie negra, que parte de un hecho actual (el asesinato de un padre y su hija en una pequeña ciudad de Paraguay), con una novela histórica ricamente compuesta en la que, a través de los siglos, la historia del violín aparece representada en la vida de sus dueños ocasionales a lo largo de casi tres siglos.

Hablamos aquí de una narrativa compleja que ofrece varias capas de sentidos. Esta novela invita a los lectores a hacer un recorrido apasionante entre las leyes propias del policía (nada se sabe del móvil del doble crimen), y asistimos a su investigación, el seguimiento de un hilo histórico desde las profundidades de las almas de quienes han sido dueños del violín. Esta novela policial y el germen de novela histórica que van alternando en los capítulos pares e impares se contraponen, se articulan y complementan para formar un universo muy atractivo en su coherencia interna.

La novela no está exenta de una veta sobrenatural: el último violín construido por Stradivari se presenta como un amuleto, un objeto poderoso que preserva de todos los males a quien lo posea. Aunque, de tomarlo de una manera estrictamente realista, la música sublime que produce también podría ser un buen ejemplo de alguna especie de protección pagana o divina.

If every novel could represent a world, this new work by Alejandro Guillermo Roemmers represents--quite powerfully--two. The last violin crafted by the celebrated luthier Antonio Stradivari takes center stage and serves as the common thread binding two distinct plots into a single, unified narrative: a crime novel in the noir tradition, rooted in a contemporary event (the murder of a father and his daughter in a small Paraguayan town), and a richly composed historical novel in which, over the centuries, the violin's story is reflected in the lives of its successive owners across nearly three hundred years.

What unfolds is a layered narrative, rich in meaning. The novel invites readers on a thrilling journey through the logic of a detective story (the motive behind the double homicide remains unknown), while also tracing a historical thread deep into the souls of those who have owned the violin. The crime novel and the historical novel--woven through alternating chapters--stand in contrast, yet interlock and enrich each other, creating a captivating world with powerful internal coherence.

A hint of the supernatural runs through the novel: Stradivari's final violin is portrayed as a talisman, a powerful object that protects its possessor from all harm. Though, taken from a purely realistic perspective, the sublime music it produces could just as easily be seen as a form of pagan--or divine--protection.

Alejandro Guillermo Roemmers nació en Buenos Aires en 1958, en una familia que le ofreció la oportunidad de una educación excepcional. Comenzó a escribir de niño, y su poesía ha sido objeto de numerosas publicaciones y distinciones. Ganó el Segundo Premio de Poesía de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, donde estudió. En esos años dedicó numerosos poemas a España, varios de los cuales se encuentran en su primer libro, Soñadores, soñad. En 1996 presentó España en mí en la Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid, al conmemorarse el décimo aniversario de la muerte de Jorge Luis Borges, y la editorial Huerga y Fierro publicó Poemas elegidos. En 2006 fue invitado, en representación de los poetas argentinos, a hablar en la Biblioteca de Alejandría, en Egipto, sobre Jorge Luis Borges. En 2008 recibió el Premio del Pen Club de España, y en 2009 le otorgaron, en Orihuela, el Premio Miguel Hernández a la trayectoria poética. En 2010 fue nombrado Personalidad Destacada de la Cultura por el Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, y ese mismo año recibió un reconocimiento en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. También ha sido homenajeado por la Cámara de Diputados de Argentina en mérito a su contribución a la cultura y las letras. Actualmente es vicepresidente de la Fundación Argentina para la Poesía y presidente honorario de la Asociación Americana de Poesía. La Sociedad Argentina de Escritores lo ha distinguido nombrándolo Embajador de las Letras Argentinas. Alejandro Guillermo Roemmers was born in Buenos Aires in 1958, into a family that provided him with an exceptional education. He began writing as a child, and his poetry has been widely published and honored with numerous awards. He won the Second Poetry Prize from the Autonomous University of Madrid, where he studied. During those years, he dedicated many poems to Spain, several of which appear in his first book, Soñadores, soñad. In 1996, he presented España en mí at the National Library of Madrid to mark the tenth anniversary of Jorge Luis Borges's death, and the publisher Huerga y Fierro released Poemas elegidos. In 2006, he was invited to speak at the Library of Alexandria in Egypt, representing Argentine poets, on the subject of Jorge Luis Borges. In 2008, he received the Pen Club of Spain Award, and in 2009, he was granted the Miguel Hernández Award for Poetic Achievement in Orihuela. In 2010, he was named a Distinguished Cultural Figure by the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, and that same year he was honored by the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He has also been recognized by the Argentine Chamber of Deputies for his contributions to culture and literature. He currently serves as Vice President of the Argentine Foundation for Poetry and Honorary President of the American Poetry Association. The Argentine Society of Writers has named him Ambassador of Argentine Letters.
