Most people are not failing because they are lazy. They are failing because their effort is scattered. In a world of Slack threads, overflowing inboxes, and back-to-back meetings, the greatest threat to meaningful progress is not a shortage of time or talent - it is the absence of focus. In One Move: Focus for People Juggling Thirty Tasks, operational strategist and former COO Brennan Renvik delivers a rigorous, research-backed guide to a deceptively simple idea: at any given moment, there is one action that matters more than all the others. Find it, protect it, and do it first. Everything else follows. Drawing on cognitive science, behavioral research, and hard-won experience leading distributed organizations of hundreds of people, Renvik dismantles the myth of the multitasker, shows why ordinary effort reliably produces ordinary results, and introduces the "Single Action Method" - a practical system for identifying and executing the one move with the greatest downstream impact. Readers will learn how to: - Use the Focusing Question as a daily compass to cut through noise and commit to what matters most - Apply backward planning to turn abstract goals into specific actions they can take today - Build a focus habit that runs on autopilot before willpower gets a chance to fail - Use time blocking not as a scheduling trick but as an act of self-respect - Manage energy - sleep, nutrition, and recovery - as the true foundation of deep cognitive work - Defend their focus blocks from interruptions, requests, and the guilt of being temporarily unavailable - Identify accountability partners and allies who raise the standard of what feels normal and possible - Reset quickly after inevitable periods of drift without shame or self-sabotage - Design a life around what genuinely matters, not just what is loudest Renvik draws on the work of Anders Ericsson, Peter Drucker, Peter Gollwitzer, Gloria Mark, Katy Milkman, and others to build a coherent, actionable framework. Case studies of real individuals - a stalled salesperson, an overwhelmed product manager, a solo business owner, a litigation attorney, a medical resident - show what the principles look like when applied to messy, real-life conditions. One Move is not a time management book. It is a precision tool for anyone who is already working hard but suspects that hard work alone is not enough. Whether you lead a team, run a company, or simply feel buried under the demands of modern life, this book offers a clear and honest answer to the question that determines everything: what is the one thing that, if done today, would make everything else easier or unnecessary? For readers of David Allen and Brian Tracy, One Move offers a sharper, more demanding challenge: stop optimizing everything and start choosing.

Portrait

Brennan Renvik is an American consultant, author, and former operations executive whose work focuses on operational efficiency, leadership, and the personal productivity of technology-company leaders. He earned an engineering degree from a leading American university and an MBA from one of the top U.S. business schools. Over twelve years in the SaaS and fintech industries, he rose from head of operations to chief operating officer. He led one B2B SaaS company through growth from $7 million to $90 million in annual recurring revenue and a successful exit to a strategic acquirer. He then served for three years as COO of a fintech unicorn, overseeing a team of fifteen hundred people across ten time zones. It was that final role that became the source of his core methodology. Watching a large distributed organization operate every day, Renvik identified a persistent and costly pattern: the main losses of speed and quality came not from a shortage of people, capital, or strategy, but from the fact that an enormous number of Slack threads, Notion pages, meetings, and email chains ended without a clear next step. From that observation, he developed the Single Action Method - the principle that every project, meeting, document, or decision must end with one specific next step, one specific owner, and one specific date. Everything else, he concluded, is intention disguised as work. Over time, Renvik extended the same principle beyond team operations to the personal productivity of the leader: how an executive manages their own attention, makes decisions under pressure, and builds the daily habits that compound into extraordinary results. Today he runs a consulting practice serving the CEOs and COOs of scale-up companies, leads closed cohort programs for operations directors, and provides one-on-one coaching in leadership and personal effectiveness for senior executives. In his writing, he explores three connected themes: operational discipline in the era of distributed work, leadership as a daily engineering task, and the personal productivity of the leader. One Move is his guide for anyone - executive or individual contributor - who is already working hard but has begun to suspect that effort alone is not the answer.
