Francis Scott Fitzgerald nació en St. Paul (Minnesota) en 1896. A los doce años vio cómo Procter & Gamble despedía a su padre y complicaba las finanzas de su familia. At the age of twelve, he witnessed Procter & Gamble dismiss his father, complicating the family's finances. He studied at Princeton, enlisted in the army, and during his military training in Alabama met the love of his life: Zelda Sayre. Fearing he might die in the war, he quickly wrote the novel that would bring him fame: This Side of Paradise (1920). He married Zelda and together they became epitomes of the "Lost Generation", as Gertrude Stein named it. None of his later novels repeated the initial success, but three of them are now considered classics: The Great Gatsby (1925), Tender Is the Night (1934), and the posthumous The Last Tycoon (1941), along with many of his short stories and the extraordinary autobiographical essay The Crack-Up (1945). After committing Zelda to a psychiatric hospital, he died in Hollywood, bankrupt, at the age of forty-four.
