James Dickey nació en Atlanta en 1923 y sirvió en la Segunda Guerra Mundial, durante la cual realizó más de cincuenta vuelos de combate. Dickey destacó asimismo como gran poeta de su generación; en sus poemas aparecían a menudo pilotos, jugadores de fútbol americano y campesinos, y sus temas incluían la naturaleza, la metafísica, la historia y la religión. A lo largo de su vida publicó más de veinte libros, entre ellos varios poemarios, colecciones de ensayo y la novela Hacia el mar blanco (1993).
