Su trabajo ha sido destacado en NPR, Allure, Disney+, BBC, National Geographic, Good Morning America, entre otros. Melissa posee una Licenciatura en Ecología Marina y Conservación del New College de la Florida y una Maestría en Biología Marina de la Universidad de Victoria en Nueva Zelanda.
