Kopk Poj: El Aliento de la Montaña / Kopk Poj: The Breath of the Mountain

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION “A book straddling Spanish and Ayöök (Mixe), where a mist-shrouded landscape intertwines with a passion for music and the tragedy of severed bonds, where the boundary between the earthly and the spiritual is woven with the wound, and an unspeakable pain is finally articulated through language.” —MARINA AZAHUA To cope with his despondency due to a chronic illness, Ixyam sets out to write the story of a family of philharmonic composers, whose mysterious history has become a legend in his village, arousing suspicion: Is their prodigious talent, perhaps, the result of a pact with the mountain? What is the price to pay for a gift from the hills? In Kopk Poj: The Breath of the Mountain, music is the thread that weaves together the two narrative planes: the present of Ixyam, marked by illness and writing, and the tragedy of Mónico and his children, where the prodigy that defines them stands as both legacy and destiny. Through this dual narrative thread, the novel forges a dialogue between the personal and the communal; between the deteriorating body, the challenges of accessing healthcare, family genealogies, the loss of Mixe identity in the younger generations, and a village that observes it all. With a disruptive structure and deeply poetic prose that oscillates between Ayöök and Spanish, Mito Reyes offers us a powerful portrait of collective memory, human fragility, and the transformative power of music—an emblem of identity for the Mixe people who, like their marching bands, reinvent themselves with every note to continue existing.
