La ausencia es una novela que explora cómo los secretos pueden dejar una huella imborrable. En 1941, tres figuras icónicas de la literatura estadounidense coincidieron en una apartada casa victoriana que funcionaba como residencia artística: Carson McCullers, Katherine Anne Porter y Eudora Welty. Un día, mientras nadaban en el lago de esta propiedad, se vieron envueltas en la misteriosa desaparición de una joven autora llamada Beth. Desde entonces, ninguna pudo dejar de pensar en su ausencia y, de muchas formas, ese enigma marcó sus vidas para siempre. En el presente, Lavinia Melín, una escritora que se ha quedado sin ideas, se sumerge en esta historia en busca de inspiración, sin vislumbrar que se adentra también en un universo indefinible, donde los límites entre la realidad y la ficción se difuminan hasta el punto de hacerla dudar quién es. A haunting tale about writing and memory, identity, and the truths we choose to remember... or bury. In 1941, three iconic figures of American literature came together in a secluded Victorian house that served as an artist residency: Carson McCullers, Katherine Anne Porter, and Eudora Welty. One day, while swimming in the lake on the property, they became entangled in the mysterious disappearance of a young author named Beth. Since then, none of them could stop thinking about her absence, and in many ways, that enigma shaped their lives forever. In the present, Lavinia Melín, a writer who has run out of ideas, dives into this story in search of inspiration, unaware that she is also entering an indefinable universe, where the boundaries between reality and fiction blur to the point of making her question who she really is.

Mónica Lavín es autora de libros de cuentos, novela y ensayo. Ha sido Premio Nacional de Literatura Gilberto Owen por el libro de cuentos Ruby Tuesday no ha muerto, Premio Narrativa de Colima por su novela Café cortado, Premio Iberoamericano de Novela Elena Poniatowska por Yo, la peor, sobre Sor Juana y su tiempo. Sus publicaciones más recientes son: la antología de cuentos -A qué volver? (Tusquets, 2018), las novelas Todo sobre nosotras (Planeta, 2019) y Últimos días de mis padres (Planeta, 2022). Escribió el libreto para una ópera sobre Sor Juana: La sed de los cometas, que se estrenó en septiembre de 2022. Es columnista en la sección cultural de El Universal, profesora e investigadora en la Academia de Creación Literaria de la Universidad Autónoma de la Ciudad de México, Maestra Universitaria Distinguida por la Universidad de Colima y miembro del Sistema Nacional de Creadores. Entre sus obras más recientes se encuentran: Tonada de un viejo amor (reedición, 2023), El lado salvaje (2024) y La ausencia (2025). Mónica Lavín is a writer of short stories, novels, and essays. She received the Gilberto Owen National Literature Prize for her short story collection Ruby Tuesday no ha muerto, the Colima Narrative Prize for her novel Café cortado (Cut Coffee), and the Elena Poniatowska Ibero-American Novel Prize for Yo, la peor (I, the Worst), a novel about Sor Juana and her time. Her most recent publications include the short story anthology -A qué volver? (What to Return To) (Tusquets, 2018), and the novels Todo sobre nosotras (All About Us) (Planeta, 2019) and Últimos días de mis padres (Last Days of My Parents) (Planeta, 2022). She wrote the libretto for an opera about Sor Juana titled La sed de los cometas (The Thirst of Comets), premiered in September 2022. Lavín is a columnist for the cultural section of El Universal, a professor and researcher at the Literary Creation Academy of the Autonomous University of Mexico City, a Distinguished University Professor at the University of Colima, and a member of the National System of Creators.
