Samia Essabaa is 42 and teaches English at Moulin-Fondu, the technical school of Noisy-le-Sec (93).
The majority of her pupils are Muslims and come from families of Arabic and Black African descent.
After the 11th of September, she becomes conscious of the extent of the racism and anti-Semitism that dominates in her classes - the generalized belief that the Jews are responsible for much of the world's problems, including the problems faced by the pupils themselves. Herself a Muslim of Moroccan origins, Samia Essabaa is appalled by her pupils' attitude and decides to act on it. In 2005, she organizes a school trip to Auschwitz. During the preparation for the trip she realizes how little her pupils know about certain periods of history: the name Auschwitz often does not mean anything to them, or its existence is questioned.
Samia is not the first teacher to take her class to visit a concentration camp, but she is the first to renew the experience. In 2007 she decides to take two groups of students along, and brings together pupils from a Jewish school of Pavillon-sous-Bois near Paris and from the School of Casablanca which hosts a mixed population of Jewish and Muslim pupils.
