Sport and Sustainability in Emerging Nations

This book examines how sport is contributing to sustainability in emerging nations in terms of environmental, economic, social and governance dimensions. A successor volume to Sport and Development in Emerging Nations (2021), this book features in-depth case studies of 14 emerging nations, including Brazil, China, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Poland, Qatar, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan and Türkiye. The book provides examples of challenges and opportunities presented by the incorporation of sustainable practices into the management and governance of sport, and offers evidence of how sustainability in sport requires a holistic commitment to integrating sustainability principles into how sport is organised, governed, and experienced. Each country case-study drills deep into the specific circumstances of that country, including data on sport events, facilities, organisations and the management of athletes and leagues, and assesses efforts to implement sustainable practices and indicates how those efforts might develop in the future. Sport and Sustainability in Emerging Nations is important reading for advanced students, researchers or policy-makers with an interest in sustainability, social responsibility and the environment in the context of sport management, sustainable business or the relationships between sport, the environment and society.

Brendon Knott is an Associate Professor and Director of the Centre for Sport Business and Technology Research, in the Sport Management Department at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, South Africa. His primary research interests are in sport tourism, sport mega-events and place branding. He co-chaired the 5th World Association of Sport Management Conference (WASM 2026) and serves as Regional Editor for Event Management and Editorial Board member of the Journal of Destination Marketing and Management. Cem Tinaz is Principal Lecturer in International Sport Management at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, Netherlands, and Adjunct Professor at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. He serves as Vice President of Tennis Europe, where he contributes to strategic governance and development at the continental level. His research focuses on sport policy and development, governance, athlete pathways, and the legacies of major sporting events.
