This new Supplementary Dictionary of Sports Personalities contains over 250 biographical entries on famous individuals from the world of sports. Spanning a wide range of sporting disciplines, including cricket, football, javelin, boxing, and bullfighting, this A-Z provides all the information you need on notable sportsmen and women such as Blanche Bingley, Brian Howard Clough, Mervyn Davies, José Gómez Ortega, Flo Hymann, Andy Irons, Jean Réné Lacoste, Sócrates, and many more. These entries supplement the biographical coverage in the existing sports-related content on Oxford Reference. For this online Supplementary Dictionary, 200 entries were taken from the Oxford Companion to Sports and Games (published 1975), edited by the late John Arlott. These entries were revised and updated by Stuart George, who also wrote over 60 new entries for this A-Z.
Leslie Thomas John Arlott, OBE, was a well-known cricket correspondent and broadcaster. He edited the first edition of the Oxford Companion to Sports and Games (1975), on which many entries in this Supplementary Dictionary are based. Stuart George is a freelance writer in London. He was UK Young Wine Writer of the Year in 2003 and reviews cricket books for the Times Literary Supplement.
